Sicilian wine making has been wholly transformed since the 1980s. Once known primarily for rich fortified Marsala wines, the island now has a well-earned reputation for good quality everyday wines, red and white.
Our focus will be on the superior wines produced on the island, particularly the quality wines being produced from indigenous varietals. The large variety of grapes used on the island makes for wonderful diversity of styles. Excellent white wines are made from local varieties Catarrato, Grecanico, Inzolia, Grillo and Caricante.
The best known Sicilian red varietal is Nero d’Avola. Although suited for drinking young it is increasingly being used by Sicilian wine to make fine wines intended for ageing. There are surprises such as the fragrant Frappato blended with Nero d’Avola to make Cerasuolo di Vittoria DOCG, but perhaps the greatest discovery will be the varietal Nerello Mascalese, grown on the slopes of Etna, which produces wonderful Burgundian style reds.
French varietals such as Merlot, Syrah, Chardonnay and Viognier are increasingly important across Sicily. Planeta, one of the most successful Sicilian wineries initially built their name on the success of French varietals.
This trip has been organized with private access to some of the region’s most renowned producers, including a wonderful day with the Tasca d’Almerita family at their estate.
This unique tour is created specifically for private parties of ten or more and is perfect for wine enthusiasts who enjoy the romance of Italian wine culture.
